A Century of Craftsmanship in Flint (Est. 1916)
Just beyond the heart of downtown Flint, a family-owned lumber yard has been operating from the same location since 1916. While many businesses founded during that era were closely tied to the rise of the automobile industry, Michigan Lumber followed a different path—one rooted in craftsmanship, community growth, and dependable service.
Still Standing Where It All Began
Michigan Lumber is located at 1919 Clifford Street, near the intersection of Saginaw Street and 12th Street—right where it has always been. The yard is now operated by third- and fourth-generation family members.
The company takes great pride in preserving the traditions passed down through generations while continuing to serve the evolving needs of the Flint community.

From Sweden to Michigan
The story begins in the late 1800s, when Nel Olson arrived in America from Sweden. Encouraged by fellow countrymen, he came to Michigan to work in the growing logging industry.
Nel established a successful lumber mill in Manistee before sending his three sons—Philip, Anton, and Victor—to Flint in 1914. Their goal was to start a lumber supply business in a city experiencing rapid growth.

Building a Reputation
The Olson brothers purchased the "Michigan Cedar and Pole Company" from the Holihan family. In 1916, they officially incorporated Michigan Lumber and Fuel Company.
From the beginning, the Olsons focused on providing dependable materials. That commitment quickly earned the trust of builders and contractors throughout the Flint area.
